Facial massage plays an important role in face yoga, helping to boost the circulation, stimulate lymphatic drainage, and release tension from the muscles. While I love how much we can do just with our hands and a few drops of serum, there are times when using a simple facial tool can really take our massage to the next level.

One of my favourite facial tools is a jade roller. I love crystal facial tools generally for their many benefits for our skin, so I also use my gua sha and my crystal precision tools regularly. But when you want to soothe and smooth your skin, a jade roller is a beautiful tool to use.

Naturally cool, jade is a refreshing crystal to use on your skin. It is a great all-rounder, suitable for any skin type and for use at any time of day.

A jade roller is also a simple and easy tool to use, so it won’t take you long to get the hang of it. A short massage with the roller is a lovely, calming way to finish your usual skincare routine, whether in the morning or at night.

In this post, I’m going to run through a quick guide to using your jade roller for smoother skin. We’ll cover the whole face, using the roller to release tension, encourage lymphatic drainage, and smooth out lines.

The whole sequence only takes around three minutes, so it will hopefully fit well with your existing routine.

Make sure you have clean hands and a clean face before you start. Apply a few drops of the Fusion by Danielle Collins Pro Lift Facial Moisturising Serum, using your hands to massage it into your face and neck. This will help the roller to glide easily – and in turn, the roller helps the serum to penetrate more deeply into your skin.

Grab your jade roller, and we’re ready to begin.

I usually spend around 10 seconds on each area. But you can spend as long on each move as you feel you need to – I always encourage you to work to your own level and respond to your skin’s needs. You should also choose a pressure that feels right to you, being careful to work more gently on delicate areas, like around the eyes.

1.  Neck

Start by rolling down the side of your neck for lymphatic drainage. Tilt your chin up and slightly to one side to make it easier to access the area. Lift off when you get to your collarbone and start again from the top.

Repeat on the other side. This helps with lymphatic drainage.

Then rest your roller on one side of your collarbone and give it a few pulses. Again, this is to stimulate lymphatic drainage. Repeat on the other side.

Next, tilt your head back slightly and roll up over the front of your neck and under the chin to gently lift the area.

2. Jaw

Starting at your chin, roll out over one side of your jaw towards your ear. When you get to the edge of your jaw, lift off and return to your chin to repeat the action.

Repeat this on the other side too.

We hold a lot of emotional tension in our jaws, so this helps to relax the area and smooth out the skin.

3. Mouth

Take the jade roller to the centre of your lips and roll it out across your lower cheek. Repeat on the other side.

Then, work along your smile lines. Start just to one side of your chin and take the roller up to the outside corner of your nostril to soften lines and smooth out the skin. Repeat on the other side.

4. Cheeks

Next, take your jade roller to your cheekbones, starting at your nose. Roll outwards over your cheekbone to boost blood circulation and brighten the skin.

Make sure you do both sides.

5. Under Eyes

Switch to using the smaller end of the roller. Gently glide the roller beneath your eyes, working outwards from your nose.

This helps to reduce puffiness and dark circles. Spend 10 seconds or so on one eye and then repeat on the other.

The cool stone of the jade roller feels especially soothing in this area – wonderful when your eyes are feeling tired or puffy.

6. Between Eyebrows

Still using the smaller roller, stroke up between your eyebrows. This helps to relax the procerus muscle, reducing number 11 lines.

7. Forehead

Go back to using the bigger roller. Come up over the centre line of your forehead, working up from between your eyebrows to the top of your forehead.

Then, roll horizontally out across your forehead, starting at the centre line and concentrating on one side first, then the other.

This helps to smooth out lines and wrinkles and boosts blood circulation, brightening the skin.

8. Final Lymph Massage

We’ll finish off by working back down the face to encourage lymphatic drainage and leave your skin looking refreshed. Start with the cheekbones, then come down to the jaw, and end the massage by working down the sides of your neck again, as we did at the start.

Finished!

That’s it – a quick and easy sequence using a jade roller to smooth out your skin and leave your face feeling relaxed and refreshed.

If you’d like a video version of this routine, you can find one on my YouTube channel here.

Obviously, the most important part of this is having a high-quality jade roller to use for your massage. Sadly, there are plenty of cheap knockoffs out there that don’t use real jade, so it’s important to choose your roller carefully.

I love the Scilla Rose ™ Jade Rollers – a lot of care and attention has gone into making these rollers and it shows. They are beautifully made items, crafted from real jade, and feel wonderful on your skin. I stock both their jade rollers and their rose quartz rollers in my online shop.
