6 things not to do with face yoga

Usually, my blog posts focus on sharing tips and advice to help you get the most from your Face Yoga practice. But sometimes it’s helpful to have a list of things NOT to do as well as what you should do. This post will give you just that – six things to avoid doing during Face Yoga.

1. PULLING AT THE SKIN AROUND YOUR EYES

We never want to drag or pull at any of the skin on the face, but this is especially vital when we’re working with the eye area. The skin here is extremely delicate, so we need to keep our touch as light as a feather.

It’s tempting to think that pressing harder is better. You might feel as though this light touch won’t have much impact. In fact, the opposite is true when working with the skin around the eyes. You’ll see better results if you stay gentle.

2. CREATING LINES

Usually, people come to face yoga first because they want to reduce lines and wrinkles on their faces. So, the last thing we want is to create new lines while doing these techniques.

When you follow along with my routines, you’ll notice that I’m always careful to let you know when you should look out for lines forming during a face yoga move. I’ll also give you tips on how to prevent it from happening – adapting the pose by bringing in your fingers or hands to smooth the skin.

3. COMING FROM A PLACE OF HATE

Face yoga is known for helping to tone your face and giving you bright, glowing skin, so it is no wonder that many of us come to it first because there are things that we want to change about how we look currently.

However, I always urge you to approach face yoga from a place of gratitude. When we focus on feeling grateful for our faces as they are right now, we begin to unlock the deeper benefits of face yoga as a practice that centres around self-love and self-care.

When you come from a place of gratitude, your gentle, loving touch becomes an affirmation of your worth. Even if you are just doing ten minutes of face yoga a day, this space to slow down and concentrate on yourself becomes an island of calm that can help to carry you through the rest of your busy day.

4. FORGETTING TO HYDRATE

Getting enough fluids is vital to our health and wellbeing, but many of us don’t drink enough. While face yoga and facial massage help to nourish your skin from the outside, it is also important to take care of it from the inside, which means getting plenty to drink throughout the day.

As well as being great for your skin, staying well-hydrated keeps your body functioning as it should, boosts your mood, and makes it easier to concentrate. When you finish your face yoga, try to make it a habit to reach for your water bottle or another hydrating drink.

5. HOLDING STRESS IN YOUR FACE

Most of us hold a lot of emotion in our faces. You probably feel it at the end of a long day – you might notice your jaw is tight or you’ve been drawing your eyebrows together.

Over time, this tension causes lines and wrinkles. It can also contribute to other issues, including headaches and jaw pain such as TMJ. One of the aims of face yoga is to release that tension and relax your facial muscles.

Whenever you do face yoga, focus on relaxing as much of your face as possible, even if you are just concentrating on one or two areas with the techniques themselves.

6. NOT PREPARING

There’s not a lot you need to do to prepare for a face yoga sequence, but there are some steps I always remind you to take before you start. Make sure your hands and face are clean, have a mirror to hand so that you can see what you are doing, and apply a few drops of my Pro Lift Moisturising Facial Serum.
