Do at-home facial lasers work?

Today’s post is a look at a product I was gifted recently by Tria Beauty, a brand that makes light-based skincare available to people at home. They sent me their Age-Defying Laser to try out and review.

Honestly, I was a bit daunted by this product at first. I’ve never had any kind of laser treatment before – not at home and not in a salon either – so this was a completely new experience for me. When the laser arrived, it sat in its box for a couple of weeks before I felt ready to give it a try.

Once I started using it though, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed making the laser part of my daily skincare regime. It is simple and easy to use. Plus, it takes amazingly little time, so adding it into my existing routine was a breeze.

Now that I’ve used the laser for a few weeks, I wanted to share my experience with all of you, in case anyone has been thinking of trying a facial laser treatment and wants to know more.

In the interest of transparency, I should add that Tria Beauty is paying me for this partnership. However, they didn’t tell me what to say – I’m completely free to share my honest opinion, which is exactly what I’m going to do in this post.

If you’d like to see the laser in action, I’ve also shared some of my thoughts on it over on my YouTube channel.

ABOUT THE TRIA BEAUTY AGE-DEFYING LASER

As I say, I was gifted one of the Tria Beauty Age-Defying Lasers to try at home. This product takes the laser technology used in salons and beauty clinics and makes it available for people to use themselves at home.

If you buy one brand new, the laser costs £450 (this is the UK price). This includes a 60-day money-back guarantee.

Honestly, it is a lot of money for a skincare tool. But it is a one-off cost. In contrast, if you went for laser treatment in a salon, you’d usually need five or more sessions, and each session can cost as much as £500. So, buying a facial laser for use at home is definitely the more affordable option.

At-home laser treatments are more time-effective too. Instead of having to book an appointment and travel to a salon, you can simply add the laser to your usual skincare routine.

Tria Beauty also offers ‘Unopened Refreshed’ lasers at a lower price of £150. These are lasers that have been returned by their retailers as unsold items. They are still unused and unopened, but they don’t include the 60-day guarantee.

HOW DOES THE TRIA BEAUTY AGE-DEFYING LASER WORK?

I was surprised at how easy and quick the facial laser is to use. It really is very simple.

First, you thoroughly wash your face (and hands). You want to make sure your skin is free of all products, makeup, and oils. Dry your face too.

The facial laser has three different levels. I’ve been using it on the lowest setting. A little indicator lights up dots to show which level you have the laser set to.

Once you’ve chosen your setting, you simply move the laser over your skin. You divide your face up into four different zones – the two cheeks, your forehead, and the lower face. Then you work on each zone in turn.

For my cheeks and lower face, I like to hold the laser vertically and move it in a horizontal back-and-forth motion over my skin. I use my other hand to pull my skin taut while I move the laser, to prevent it from dragging at my skin.

On my forehead, I turn the laser horizontal and use an up-and-down movement instead.

The laser makes a little beeping noise when it is time to move to the next zone and then has a different sound that indicates when the treatment is finished.

On the first level, each zone takes around 30 seconds, so the treatment is just two minutes in total. When you get up to level three, you spend closer to two-and-a-half minutes per zone – even then, the total treatment will only take ten minutes.

ARE FACIAL LASERS SAFE TO USE?

Before I started, I looked at some reviews and feedback from other people. Some had mentioned that they found the laser treatment uncomfortable or painful. I’ve only used it on the lowest setting, and it does give me a faint prickling sensation. It isn’t enough to cause any discomfort though, and I certainly haven’t found it painful. This might be something to watch out for on the higher levels.

What I do notice is that my skin is a little red after using it, as you’d expect from a treatment like this. The redness fades after around five minutes or so. Then I’m just left with beautifully glowing skin.

I do like to have my serum to hand so that I can apply it immediately after the treatment. This helps to soothe and hydrate my skin and takes down any redness.

Tria Beauty recommends using the laser in the evening, although you can use it in the morning instead if that is the only time that works for you.

It is very important to apply your SPF in the morning when you are using a facial laser, no matter what time of day you do the treatment itself. Of course, we should all be applying SPF daily anyway, so this hopefully won’t require any changes to your usual routine.

The other thing that is vital when using a facial laser at home is to keep the laser moving all the time. If you keep it in one spot for too long it can damage your skin, or even cause burns. This is where the small amount of risk comes in

The Tria Beauty Laser is cleverly designed. You can see that you are using it correctly because a purple light appears when it is in contact with your skin. If you hold it at the wrong angle, the purple light disappears, so the laser itself guides you in how to use it.

Tria Beauty developed their laser in consultation with leading dermatologists and the product has been cleared by the FDA too.

WHO CAN USE FACIAL LASERS?

Facial laser treatment isn’t suitable for everyone. If you are pregnant or under 18, you shouldn’t use a laser.

You should also avoid using the laser on skin that is crusty or bleeding. Don’t use it over warts or moles either.

Speak to a dermatologist before using a laser if you have a medical condition or any skin issues. And stop using it straight away if you experience any skin problems after using the laser.

You also shouldn’t use the laser if it is wet or if your skin is wet. Other than that, facial laser treatment is suitable for most people.

Initially, you’ll use the laser every day for eight weeks. You can then repeat the treatment from time to time when you feel your skin needs the boost.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF FACIAL LASERS?

The Age-Defying Laser emits beams of light that penetrate deep into the skin. This light causes microscopic pockets of cellular disruption, activating the skin’s natural healing mechanisms.

As the skin springs into action to repair the treated areas, it stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. This has multiple benefits for our skin, including,

  • Reducing and preventing lines and wrinkles
  • Evening out skin discolouration
  • Making skin clearer, smoother, and more radiant

I found the treatment left my face with a lovely healthy glow that lasted for the rest of the day.

I also found the process very nourishing. As you know, I love facial massage and the feeling of self-care that comes from looking after my skin. It is a simple thing, but it really affirms that we are worthy of care and attention.

WOULD I RECOMMEND THE TRIA BEAUTY FACIAL LASER?

Now that I’ve used the Age-Defying Laser for a few weeks, I can say with confidence that I do recommend this product. It is so easy to use, gives your skin a beautiful glow, and I’ve not had any issues with pain or discomfort.

I suggest you do your own research before purchasing, to make sure laser treatment is appropriate for you. If you have any medical or skin conditions, speak to a professional first.

To get the most from the laser treatment, I highly recommend reading the instructions carefully before you use it. Look after it well too – I give mine a quick clean with a face wipe every time I use it, but you should never put water anywhere near the laser.

Make sure you apply facial serum after using the laser. You should also apply SPF every morning to protect your skin.

Although the lasers are expensive, I think it is worth the cost if you are considering laser treatment – it is much cheaper than having the treatment in a salon and much more convenient too.
